High-altitude locations such as Cusco, La Paz, and Rainbow Mountain can pose risks of altitude sickness. To mitigate symptoms, consider arriving a few days early to acclimatize, stay hydrated, eat light meals, avoid alcohol, and speak to your doctor about altitude sickness medications.
The weather can vary significantly, so packing layers is essential. Include warm clothing for cold nights in high-altitude areas, comfortable walking shoes, rain gear, and sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses).
Respect local customs and traditions. In both Peru and Bolivia, it’s polite to ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially in indigenous communities. Be aware of and sensitive to environmental and historical preservation efforts, especially at sites like Machu Picchu and Tiwanaku.
